AI Overview
Geek of the Week: Monika Sengul-Jones is a Wikipedian-in ...
A networked wiki is a non-linear knowledge management system. Instead of a strict hierarchical folder tree, it relies on bidirectional linking (backlinks) and tagging to form a web of interconnected concepts. This approach is ideal for deep research, brainstorming, and personal knowledge management (PKM).
Why Networked Wikis Work
  • Bi-directional Links: When you link Page A to Page B, Page B automatically records that Page A is linking to it. This allows you to see what contexts mention a given note.
  • Emergent Structure: Rather than forcing content into rigid categories from the start, topics naturally organize themselves over time based on how often they are linked.
  • Network Graphs: Many networked tools generate visual node-and-link maps of your entire repository, allowing you to spot entirely new connections between subjects.
Popular Tools
If you want to build a networked wiki, several modern applications cater to this style of organization:
  • Obsidian: A locally-hosted, markdown-based note-taking app that treats your text files as a dense, local knowledge graph.
  • TiddlyWiki: A hyper-textual, highly customizable, single-page application wiki designed for organizing and linking small chunks of data.
  • Roam Research: A pioneer in web-based networked thought, heavily utilizing daily notes and deep bi-directional referencing.
  • Notion: While highly hierarchical, it possesses strong database features that allow for networked relationships across various pages and projects.
When to Use a Networked Wiki
A networked wiki is highly recommended for tasks that require associating complex, cross-disciplinary concepts. It works exceptionally well for academic research, writing fiction, building personal wikis, and connecting long-term reading notes. Conversely, they are less suited for straightforward, linear team task management, where traditional tree-like structures often perform better.
